Oz.

The other night when I was out with some of my darling friends to see "Pitch Perfect"- (which by the way is wet your pants funny- A must see) I saw a poster for Disney's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" directed by Sam Raimi- starring James Franco, Milac Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz!
My jaw dropped, I felt like a little girl again. I am so so excited about this.
The Wizard of Oz is my most favourite story of all time, so anything to do with it I love.
I can NOT wait for this to hit theatres- March 8th 2013.
Watch the trailer here.

I'm off to see the Queen

We have a date. Tea and crumpets shall be served promptly at 2pm.
No not really, But I am off to see my best friend Hannah in exactly a week- to spend christmas with her and her family-who is basically my family as well! I am SO EXCITED.
I am packing up my bags and off I shall go.

This will be my third visit to England and I cant wait to explore and have some quality time with a girl who makes my life so much fuller and so much richer.

I am looking forward to jumping on a big red double decker bus, ice-skating, banoffee pie, watching for foxes in her backyard, drinking tea with her Mum and Dad, maybe seeing a play, going to the markets and roaming cobble stone streets.

Be sure to check in for some photos and updates of old london town. Or even if you have any "must do's or see's" let me know!

Sending letters home

It comes but once a year- Yes thats right, you got it-CHRISTMAS.

As you probably have gathered I love writing letters and am a huge believer in snail mail.
So I just wanted to share with you what I had done for my loved ones back in Australia.
I hope that the post man giggles when he comes across these in piles of white and plain envelopes.

Enjoy.

Kinfolk

I just realised I hadn't shared this beauty with you before.
So let me tell you how it all began...

I discovered "Kinfolk"  I believe late last year, actually through instagram- An american girl I follow would always post these romantic morning tea settings with kinfolk accompanied by cups of coffee or would be curled up in bed with this magazine and so I decided to hunt this down and see what the fuss was about.

I eventually found "Kinfolk" in Pulp (Sydney Australia) -actually when I was working there and decided to have a read in a 'down hour'- from there it became my beautiful addiction. That afternoon, I purchased one and decided that this would be my tomorrow morning well spent.

As I read and looked through the pictures, I found myself completely captivated and in awe of these descriptive and enriching stories. All my senses came alive; The Stories of ways of life, thoughtful processes, shared meals, joyous occasions, family traditions, people's meetings and encounters all spoke to my spirit and I felt like I had been revived.

I feel like Kinfolk awakens you and gives you permission to breath, to wander, to think, to love, to create, to enjoy, to ponder, to see, to taste, to smell, to touch and to share.

It is a magazine that teaches you and reminds you of what it means to truly enjoy life.
So do yourself a favour, find a Kinfolk and go to your favourite place and set aside some time to read, soak and enjoy.

Justine Martin

My darling friend Justine reminds me of a magic toy box - the kind that when one opens it characters and toys come to life and perform for you.
Costumes swirl and parade around you, while dolls with painted cheeks giggle and curtsey,  giraffes stroll the streets in fine and fancy hats and jack in the box pops up at any unexpected time.

Justine loves Bows, Butterflies, has the most cheeky little smile I have ever seen AND she has just launched her EP "O Sailor Man" (which you can buy on itunes) and what a playful, fun and quirky EP it is.
This is what I love about Justine- She is an incredible storyteller and has this ability to create songs and music that contain unexpected and surprising things..
So have a listen and be delighted in her playfulness and whimsy.

PS. I was the featured artist in her little film clip "O Sailor Man"
Enjoy.

Hello, Ciao, Bonjour, Hola

Hello to all.
I hope you are liking the new blog and all its fine details.
For those of you who have just found me WELCOME AND HELLO from me to you.

Seeing as Christmas is only 42 days, 2 hours, 41 minutes and 15 seconds away I decided I wanted to start sharing with you some of my wish list items.

Here is number one.
As I am a true believer in snail mail, love notes and writing letters there wouldn't be a better way then to begin this off with a writing set from the amazingly talented Rifle Paper Co
It is a set of 12 writing cards and envelopes with charming characters from cities all over the world.
Now keep in mind these were created exclusively for Anthropologie -which makes it even more special. So pop into a store near you or jump online and place your order.
Enjoy.

You'll Never Guess What!!?

We've been wishing and hoping and planning and praying – and now it's finally happened!

My blog has been redesigned by the most wonderful designer I know (and I think in the world) – Alyssa Yuhas. Who I have the privilege of also calling my friend! Not to mention her wonderful partner in crime – my photographer, Shane Yuhas.

We've been dreaming this up for a little while now but I am thrilled with the finished product and happy to tell you every little detail is created by my hands.

Be sure to keep checking in for new creations, discoveries and adventures!
Much love,
Elise Maree

6x8

Here are some little picture's of the artwork I recently submitted to a local favourite shop of mine "The Paper Place".
For the past few years "The Paper Place" have held an annual art competition entitled "6x8" where local Toronto artists or people from the community who love to dabble in art can submit an artwork created by themselves to be displayed within the store and get a chance to be named 'The Winner'.
It could be anything you like, the only stipulation is that the work has to be upon a 6X8 size of Etchu Hagaki (which is handmade Japanese kozo card)

So this is what I came up with.

Title: "Flower Bed"

Enjoy what is left of what seems to be an overcast and cozy Sunday.

Extra, Extra Read all about it

Goodness me it feels like forever since I have shared anything fun and exciting with you.
And boy do I have some news to tell you- I have just moved across the world (again), Back to Canada but to a new city, Toronto~ actually it was to help start a church ... hence why I have been out of action for a while.
A team of 8 of us, packed up our worlds into 2 Uhaul vans and drove across Canada, from Calgary to Toronto (through the states) and what a fun four day drive it was. Full of truck stops, beef jerky, Katy Perry dance parties, late night swims at our hotel and life changing conversation.

Here's one of our trucks. This one in particular was not a truck that made you feel safe~ as we packed it a little 'left' heavy so when we would go around corners you felt like we might tip over!
(we laugh about it now)

Here is a map at one of our MANY truck stops. We were somewhere in America~ I'm not much of a navigator, so I don't even remember where this was.

So now we are just getting settled in, assembling ikea furniture and exploring this place we now call home. There are so many wonderful things to find in this city, not to mention endless things to see and do. Tiff (Toronto International Film Festival) is coming up and many stars come to town for the premiers of the films they star in~ There is a certain celeb I wouldn't mind seeing from afar~ but ill never tell my crush!
Anyway, Keep your eyes peeled as I have many more fun things to tell you about and share.

Much Love
Elise Maree

Phebe Starr

Now here's someone you should definitely know about & someone to keep an eye and ear out for.

Her name is Phebe Starr and her music is the epitome of how beauty & mystery can collide with this phenomenal, out of this world edge.

I feel like if you were to put David Bowie, Florence + The Machine & Lady Ga Ga into a blender Phebe Starr is who would be created.
She is one of the most "Far out", Quirky and talented singer//song writers I have ever encountered and I am so excited to see her creating and unfolding all that she is to the world.

So, get out your planner as you are not going to want to miss her launch "Alone with you" on June 14th at The Standard Bourke Street. (Book your tickets here

Spiritus

I heard this on the radio on the way to work this morning and I said to myself "prepare to be blown away"  and how I was.
I LOVE this song "Spiritus" by the one and only Lisa Mitchell.
I love their bare feet and that some are in ankle booties and that this feels like this free, indie, kaleidoscope, sun kissed song!
Have a listen.

The perfect day

Today was the perfect day.
Things are really starting to happen for me guys!
I am now (and will be) selling in 3 shops (for now).
Here they are:
Pulp Creative Paper
Portobello Rose
and
Paper 2- Surrey Hills
Be sure to go in and have a look...maybe even buy a little "somethin somethin".

Its here. Its here.

Oh how I feel I have waited ever so long for this to arrive.
My order finally made it to my local bookstore and I can now call this my own.
This is the most perfect book cover I have ever seen and owned.
You may have seen my previous post about it, however I will tell you again. penguin has teamed up/collaborated with artists to create their book covers and what is so appealing and wonderful about this is that its all stitched! The artist is Rachell Sumpter and what a talent she is.
The funnest feature about this book though is that when you open the cover it actually has the back of the original artwork printed on it..and for those of you who have done sewing, hand embroidery etc it can look like a wonderful and colourful mess and indeed this does.
Well done Rachell-love love love your work.

Creative Spaces

Heres a fun little picture of me in my creative space that was taken by my darling friend Dalyce that I just HAD to share with you.
I wanted you to see where the magic happens.

Here's what I know and think about "Creatives Spaces":

I believe that its absolutely crucial for each "creative/artist" to have a space thats completely their own and that they can dedicate to creating!

It could be a desk, a room, a wall, a garage, a chair or a basement, just anything that you can call your own.
Its the kind of space that inspires you, the kind of space you want to spend time in. Its full of all of their favorite things, Those things that excite and energize you and those things that speak to you.  Whether its a print of another artist you admire or a collection of wooden coloured pencils, maybe its a card thats words encouraged you, rolls of printed papers or a box of rusted scissors...what ever it is that makes you feel alive and excited surround your creative space with it.

I know for me I love different glass jars and glass cups and fun pencils to fill them with. Like my collection of lead pencils that are wrapped in fun coloured polka dot paper and look like they have a birthday party on top of them or even little messages in bottles. Again its all about what brings you joy and inspiration.

Another thing that I think is important is a space that you can leave and come back to as is. Its got to be a space that you can walk away from for a few days and not worry about it getting in anyone else's way or 'under anyone else's skin'. The last thing you want is someone demanding you clean up the kitchen table!

Here are some more little tips and tricks:

~Keep your essentials stocked up- the last thing you want to happen is you get into your 'groove' or "in the zone' only to figure out you have run out of blue paint! By the time you run to the store to get it you may have lost your zeal.

~Play music that enhances your creativity. Doesn't matter if its a grand symphony classic or some wild hardcore punk band turn it on and turn it up. What ever gets you going!

~Be always looking and collecting. Every thing your eyes see and you come across can be used as inspiration. If you have trouble remembering things carry a pen/pencil and a notebook/sketch book in your bag and jot it all down as it comes to you. Collect business cards, write down blogs and artists work that you come across at openings or markets. Continually soak it all up.

and finally...

~ Set aside time or days to purposely create- I am learning to love this and trust me I know this may seem difficult, however I believe part of good creating is not always in those 'hype'/'genius' moments. You need to discipline your creative mind to create cause sometimes you feel like you are in the dessert but sometimes you will be stuck with deadlines and if you dont deliver you may not get asked again. Its about practise and remember to take time to just stop and sit, think, ponder, doodle, write, listen.
You may be surprised at what may begin to take place.

I hope this helped all you creatives and I would love if you had any thoughts.
Elise Maree.

City Adventures.

I hope you've all had an enjoyable weekend.
I know I sure have.
Iv'e had 2 of my wonderful Canadian friends visiting Sydney and through their eyes I have been able to see Sydney in a fresh light and all that she has to offer.

Mornings begin with hunting around jumble sales, then strolling around local markets, accompanied by fresh chocolate croissants and a good coffee.
Ferry rides through the harbour are a must and your bound to come across side street performers and musicians, so take the time to stop and watch.
Walking along and through tree covered streets is pure bliss and walking what feels like 100 miles to get to your "ut most favourite" shop in the world is totally worth it.
Then finishing the day off with a fresh jug of sangria. I tell you what,  there is no better way.

Its actually really nice to see that there are places that you so want to "show off" and share with visiting friends. The "must sees's" and places that you and they can not afford to miss. . .
The places that I would call my "gems"
Do tell me what are your so called "gems"?

Much love,
Elise Maree

Have a look

Here's whats been happening dearest.
I have been having some great creative moments and every day I am creating something...I just can't stop.
Whether it be greeting cards, pocket watch owls, lamp shades and paper flowers.

Here's some little tips for all you creative's...
Do what you love and make time for it.
Don't put pressure on yourself to create, as I think in most cases it wont work out for you.
and constantly be looking at and filling yourself with things that inspire you and that make you smile.

Enjoy these little pictures.
Much Love.
